Club Mission

F.C. Portland is an inclusive, community-minded, world-class development club which, through the best overall coach and player soccer programs, provides youth with personal growth, on and off the field.

The Academy training sessions are geared toward the overall development of Academy members as individual players, focusing primarily on tactics and technical skills. The Academy’s goal is to help each player maximize his or her skills in all areas of the game.

Club Philosophy

Clive Charles founded F.C. Portland Academy in 1987 with the key philosophy that: “Through the game of soccer there is an opportunity to prepare and develop young people for the challenges of life.” The Academy continues striving to uphold Clive’s vision for soccer and player development both on and off the field.

Clive’s philosophy, style of play, and legacy is still alive at F.C. Portland Academy. All of our coaches have either coached or have been coached by Clive himself, while our other coaches have been coached or coached with someone that was coached by Clive.

It is the mission of our coaches to continue the storied history of FC Portland and to build children into young men and women on and off the pitch. The primary goal for our coaches will always be help our players reach their objectives; be it playing varsity high school, playing in college, or playing professionally.

Below are a couple of quotes about Clive that sum up our clubs philosophy.

“Clive gave and cultivated respect to us and between us. This is a big ‘life prepare.’ You don’t let your teammates, friends and associates down.” –Kasey Keller.

“When Clive wins, it’s great for him, but I don’t think its top on his list. Players becoming complete, living up to their abilities – that, I think makes him most happy.” –Steve Cherundolo.

Style of Play

F.C. Portland Academy teams have a rich history of a possession with a purpose style of play. Since our club was founded, Clive’s vision of a style of play was innovative. Our teams have always been encouraged to play out of the back and out of tight spaces. We want our teams to be organized, fit, and aware. Our players must always look to get numbers around the ball to create a numerical advantage while attacking and defending as a unit. With the evolution of soccer in the country, our club is proud to have a style of play that is now being encouraged by US Soccer to all clubs.
