Darren began coaching at F.C. Portland Soccer Academy in 1999. Darren has coached at the University of Portland Soccer Camps as well as with the Manchester United Soccer Schools. He has also coached at Three Rivers, Portland City United and Columbia Premier Soccer Clubs since 1990. Darren was also the Head Coach for the Girl’s Varsity at Clackamas High School. Darren holds both an USSF “A” License and an USSF “National Youth License”, as well as Dutch Youth Coaching Course. As a player Darren was a three-year letterman at Evergreen State College (1985-1987).

Michael joined the FC Portland coaching staff in 2009. Michael grew up in Liverpool, England and played at Cardinal Heenan High School (with Steven Gerard). He also played for Edgehill Soccer Club Youth Program for Chester City FC. Michael coached with CCUSA at Camp Bloomfield in Malibu, CA as well as coached with UK Soccer. He is currently a student at PSU and Head Varsity Girls Coach at Valley Catholic High School.
Austra Bloms

Austra moved to Oregon from Minnesota in 1989. She played for Oregon ODP, LOSC, and Westside Christian H.S. on the Boy’s team (as her school had no Girls’ Program). Austra received a scholarship to play for Concordia University in Portland. She tore her ACL at the beginning of her sophomore year, red-shirted, and was recruited to play for Florida Atlantic University. On a full ride at FAU she won a spot on the U.S. National Deaf Soccer Team in 1999 and led her team to an historic 1st-place international win, and landed a permanent spot on the 2005 Women's Deaf Team Olympics squad. She was selected as co-captain for seven years and led the team to an Olympic Gold Medal at the 2005 Deaf Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. Austra has been coaching soccer since 1994 and is thrilled to be back in Oregon as a part of the Valiants coaching staff at Valley Catholic H.S. and as part of the F.C. Portland soccer community.

Andrew has coached youth teams for 18 years since he traveled to the U.S. from England to play soccer and attend college at Cal State Bakersfield. His playing highlights include representing southeast England schoolboys as a 17-year-old and shaking Bobby Moore’s hand as an impressionable 10-year-old at Bobby’s annual summer camp! He started for CSUB between 1991-1995, and spent 18 happy years in Bakersfield, before moving to Portland with his young family in 2010. As a coach, Andrew has guided his teams to titles in California’s prestigious State Cup and Celtic Cup.

Lisa attended Mark Morris High School in Longview, WA from 1999-2003. She played Youth club soccer for the FC Royals (currently Washington Premier), attended camps with Clive Charles, and played for FC Portland Summer Academy. Lisa played at University of Portland from 2003-2007 and was a starter on the undefeated UP Women’s NCAA Championship team in 2005. Lisa began coaching for FC Portland in 2004 with the U10 Program and has since coached U12, U15, U16 teams. Lisa joined the University of Portland soccer staff 2007. She played semi-pro with the Seattle Sounders after graduating from University of Portland and also played in the Women’s Professional League for the LA Sol. Will complete and earn her national "B" license in June 2011

Chelsea has been coaching with FC Portland Academy since 2010. She began coaching in 2009 at Lincoln High School alongside FC Portland coaches John and Shelly Wallace. Chelsea graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas in May of 2009, after playing for four years and earning two SCAC titles and three trips to the NCAA tournament. Chelsea is an alumnus of FC Portland Academy and a Portland native, having graduated from Lincoln High school in 2005.

Miguel has been coaching with FC Portland since 2003 and has worked with Jr Academy along with numerous older boys and girls teams. He grew up in Arizona where he attended Buena High School and was named the Arizona Gatorade player of the year in 2002. Miguel played in college at the University of Portland from 2002-2005 and was also part of the U18 US Men’s National Team. After college Miguel played with FC Dallas of the MLS in 2006 and USL Club Miami FC in 2007. In 2008 Miguel returned to Portland to play with the Portland Timbers for a season. Miguel has also coached at Central Catholic where he was a Boys Varsity assistant coach from 2006-2010 and helped the team win a state championship in 2007.

Popo began coaching at F.C. Portland Soccer Academy in 2004. Before coming to F.C. Portland, Popo coached for Bridlemile (2001 – 2003). As a player, he was also part of the U-17 Mexican National Team. Popo went on to play professionally in Mexico for 6 years for three different teams. He then made the move to the United States where he played for the Portland Pride, Seattle Sounders, and Salem Surge.

Garrett Smith – Age Group Coordinator

In addition to his membership on one of the first F.C. Portland Academy Men’s Teams, Garrett has been associated with the entire FC community and our keys coaches since day one. He is also the head coach for the University of Portland Women’s Side.
After serving 11 years as an assistant to coach Clive Charles, Garrett was promoted to associate director of soccer at UP in the fall of 2003, and is responsible for handling the daily operations of the women’s soccer team. Smith, who also assists the men’s team, has lifted the women’s program to new heights during his five years in the main seat. He has reached the postseason all five years, guiding the Pilots to the 2005 national championship.
Much of Smith’s coaching success mirrors his career achievements as a player. In college, Smith was one of the highest-scoring defenders in University of Portland soccer history with 25 points (7G, 11A). His collegiate soccer career at UP (1986-89) was highlighted by the 1988 team’s fabulous run to the NCAA Final Four coming within one game of the national championship match. The Pilots won their first 21 games of that season before losing 1-0 to eventual champion Indiana in the semifinals. Smith was an All-WCC first team pick in 1989 and was named team MVP in 1986. He was a three-time All-Northwest Collegiate Soccer Conference selection.

Rob previously coached Sunset High School Boys Varsity for 12 years. As a player Rob was a four-year letterman at the University of Portland (1987-1990) under Clive Charles, finishing his career with 29 goals and 14 assists. Rob was a member of the Canadian National Team 1989, and played 10 years of professional indoor soccer with the Portland Pride.

Gavin began coaching for FC Portland in 2009. Gavin played for Sereno Soccer Club in Arizona from 1997-2004. He played college soccer at the University of Portland from 2004-2007. While playing for the Pilots, Gavin was named West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year and Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Nike Portland Invitational in 2004, and made significant contributions to the Pilots on-field successes, starting over 50 games and scoring five goals.

Facundo began coaching for F.C. Portland in 2010 after playing for the club from 2001-2007. During his career with FC Portland he won two state championships in 2002 and 2004. Facundo currently plays at Concordia University and will graduate in 2012. While at Concordia, Facundo captained his team to a Cascade Collegiate Conference championship while being named Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Year his junior year.

He has also played locally for Oregon premier side Nike FC Swoosh and IPS. Dean has coached for the U9 boys at Samuel Montague Youth Club in England (2005), U10 boys and U17 Girls with Berkley Soccer Club in Michigan (2005), U10 Girls with Chelsea Soccer Club in Michigan (2005), soccer camps along the East Coast with Britannia Soccer Camps (2005), Aloha United Soccer Club (2006-2010). Dean has also acted as the Director and coach for UK International Soccer Camps and assistant varsity coach at Hillsboro High School. Dean holds both an FA Level 1 and FA Level 2 license, as well as the USSF “D” and the National “Y” License, in addition to being NHSSA and AYSO Certified.

Originally hailing from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Alex joined the F.C. Portland staff in May of 2011. After spending his youth years playing on the sun soaked fields of the Southwest, he spent a redshirt extended 4 ½ years in the rainy soaked, yet friendly confines of Merlo Field playing for the University of Portland. During his time, the Pilots reached the playoffs twice, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2009 before losing to eventual national champion Virginia. Having experience coaching summer soccer camps at UP, Kraus is looking forward to contributing to the success of F.C. Portland and to the development of youth soccer players for many years.
Paul Gouldsbrough – Age Group Coordinator

Paul has been with FC Portland since 1992 and has coached almost every age group within the club. He holds a US Soccer “A” License and the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. His playing career began in England where he played at the semi-professional level with Darwen FC in the NW Counties league. He moved to the US in 1986 and played at Warner Pacific College from 1988-1992, earning NSCAA All- American status. During his college spell he played with the Portland Timbers in 1988. His coaching resume includes a five year spell at the University of Portland under Clive Charles as an assistant. He was also the head coach of his alma mater for the 1992 season. Paul also served as F.C. Portland’s General Manager from 1999-2004. He returned to the club after establishing a successful real estate business to coach for the Junior Academy program.

Brandon McNeil – Age Group Coordinator

Brandon began coaching at F.C. Portland in 2003. Brandon is a former defender for the Pilots, joining the University of Portland soccer coaching staff in July of 2008. He assists in all phases of the men’s and women’s soccer programs, while traveling with the men. McNeil came to UP after one season as head coach of the girls soccer team at Lincoln High School in downtown Portland. In his one season at the helm of the Cardinals, McNeil led the team to the Oregon 6A State Championship and was named the state coach of the year. Lincoln finished the 2007 season with a perfect 18-0 record to claim the school’s first state title in girls soccer. Previously, McNeil was an assistant coach for the Sunset H.S. (Portland, Ore.) boys soccer team for three years (2004-06). McNeil (1998-2001) was a four-year starter for the Pilots and earned All-West Coast Conference honors as a senior. Originally from San Diego, Calif., McNeil scored two goals and handed out 17 assists during his career on The Bluff. He helped the Pilots reach the NCAA postseason twice, advancing to the third round in 2001.

Ralph joins FC Portland in the Spring of 2011 after previously coaching at WSM since 2003 where he worked with both boys and girls of various age groups. He is currently an assistant Varsity coach with Jesuit Women and was previously the boys JV coach at Jesuit High School. Ralph began coaching youth soccer in 1986 and has worked with various clubs, high schools, and OPD groups. He has served as a Board Member for the Greater Portland Soccer District and was the founding player/manager of Kells FC since 1996. Ralph currently holds a USSF C license which he obtained in 2004.
