In 1987, Former Portland Timber and West Ham United Defender Clive Charles saw the need for a soccer training academy in Portland Oregon to develop players for competitive soccer programs. With this simple goal, Coach Charles started the FC Portland Soccer Academy with a training divison consisting of 50 players.

With the leadership of Coach Charles, the Club expanded and grew to its current size of competitve teams in age groups beginning with U10 to U18 boys and girls teams, a junior academy and adult teams. The vision of Coach Charles was to provide the soccer player a place to play for their whole soccer career from youth to adult.

The key philosophy of Coach Charles which has guided and still guides the Club today:

Through the game of soccer there is an opportunity to prepare and develop young people for the challenges of life.

This embodiment of this philosophy is no more evident than in the many men and women that make up the Alumni of FC Portland. The Alumni of FC Portland have gone onto to play and excel not only at the collegiate, national and international soccer stages but also in the worlds of business, law, medicine and education.
