FC Portland’s Junior Academy Program is designed around our founding philosophy that it’s important for the youngest players to develop their fine motor skills within a setting that is dynamic, challenging and fun. Our program, over the training year, is an opportunity for young soccer players to learn new skills and to discover the proper way to progress toward the next level of competition. Dean Fowell, our Junior Academy Director, oversees every practice session and at one time or another during the training cycle, each Academy coach – veteran and rookie - will participate in at least one session within this the program. We enjoy working closely with our players and create a professional training environment to teach the many technical skills that today’s players will need early, before they grow and mature. The program is designed to benefit the young player who has a joy for the game, who has good work habits, and who is motivated to further develop his or her natural talent. FC Portland is very proud of our Junior Academy and since our founding, have believed that it is a key foundation within our overall curriculum.
Our on-field activities provide a multiple number of ways for players to love soccer – all while improving their skills. If you watch our sessions, you will see players work on decision-making, field awareness and teamwork. Dean Fowell, Director of the program has an extensive history and knowledge base on multiple drills that have been learned through the running of UK Soccer camps, competitive teams and player development programs. Rob Baarts, the Head Coach of the FC Portland Men’s Side and Assistant Coach at the University of Portland, guides the overall program direction in partnership with Dean.

We love to have “guest” players come and practice for several sessions at no charge, since this gives both your family and our coaching staff an opportunity to determine if there is a good match between the player and the program.

F.C. Portland teams have earned two national championship stars and three regional championships; our coaching staff includes several members of the first FC Portland Challenge Team, UP alumni, Portland Timber and other MLS alumni, college coaches and college alumni, high school coaches and coaches who are highly skilled at developing young people – and at teaching life’s lessons through the game of soccer. Come and visit our program!

Please contact me with your questions, or come out to the fields! Dean
