BALTIMORE -- Of all the players selected in the MLS SuperDraft on Friday, perhaps no one had a longer journey to Baltimore than Alex Nimo, Real Salt Lake's third pick of the draft.
He and his family led war-torn Liberia when he was a baby to live in a refugee camp in Ghana. It was there that he started to play soccer.
"That was like my life," said Nimo, a Generation adidas selection from the United States under-17 residency program. "I used to play with friends just to have fun as a kid. When I came here I met Clive Charles and he saw I had potential and saw that I could become a pro someday."

Highlighting this year’s class are seven players that have experience with the U.S. Youth National Teams and a finalist for this year’s MAC Hermann Trophy, college soccer’s version of the Heisman Trophy. Six of the nine players are leaving college early to enter the MLS SuperDraft - Eric Avila (UC Santa Barbara), Tony Beltran (UCLA), Chance Myers (UCLA), Patrick Nyarko (Virginia Tech), Ciaran O’Brien (UC Santa Barbara) and Rob Valentino (Univ. of San Francisco). Three players - Josh Lambo (Chicago Magic FC), Alex Nimo (FC Portland) and Brek Shea (Texans FC) - are high school students who are foregoing their college eligibility to sign professional contracts.

BALTIMORE -- With four selections in the first three rounds of the MLS SuperDraft Thursday, Garth Lagerwey was looking for a variety of qualities in the players Real Salt Lake selected at the Baltimore Convention Center.
But for the newly hired Real Salt Lake general manager, each of his team's four selections had a similar attribute -- fight. "We need that," Lagerwey said. "It's a cultural thing, a locker room thing. We have to get a group of players together who want to win and want to win really badly."

F.C. Portland Selected for the U.S. SOCCER Development Academy
F.C. Portland is pleased and honored to announce that it has been selected to join a very prestigious group of youth clubs and select MLS teams that are developing a formal partnership with the US Soccer Federation to further prepare and develop players for the men’s national teams,” said Joe Wedding, Executive Director of F.C. Portland.
Our mission, starting with the very first training session that Clive Charles designed twenty years ago, is to develop the comprehensive skills and knowledge of the game that players need to become successful on the field and in life. The alignment with U.S. Soccer is based on the success of that mission and model,” Wedding continued. "The success that our players, like Alex Nimo, have had recently, comes from our coaches and their commitment to this mission and this philosophy.

Even though I’ve watched dozens of games, I’m by no means an expert when it comes to recognizing an offsides call or determining the appropriateness of a yellow card.
If I’m not sure when the violation should be called, then how can the officials be sure about the call? Yet, when bad calls are directed towards the team I am rooting for – I often believe that I am “authorized” to complain. This is where a friend of mine, who happens to be a soccer referee, comes into play.
